Record Type Update

In general yes, though record types utilizing the older architecture methods will need to be changed over manually to use the newer ones (though in those cases i'd recommend considering starting a new one).  But small feature additions are generally available right away.  Any more specifics really depend on what exactly you're referring to, with respect to "records created in previous versions" (i.e. how long ago, what the setup was, etc).
