Update process instance plug-in

I am trying to get more knowledge about the "update process instance plugin". I tried to search in the documentation and couldn't find an appropriate solution. Can anyone guide me here?

What solution are you trying to find?  What is the issue you're trying to solve?  I don't personally know much about this plug-in, but you'll get better answers here if you supply some further details.

Thank you, Mike, for your response. In a discussion regarding the process instances with my colleagues this topic popped up and one said that the plugin is used to update the old process instances to the latest/ current version. So would like to know more about this.
