Update user profile smart service

Hi all,

I’m facing an issue in Appian that I’ve been investigating for the last few months. We have an application where we update user details using the Update User Profile smart service.

There are around 1,000 users in the application, but for some users, the process model fails while updating their profile with the error: “The selected supervisor is invalid.”

I checked those users and found that they don’t have any supervisor assigned in the admin console.

During my investigation, I opened the failed process instance using Edit Process View and checked the error node. I noticed that the Supervisor field has a value at the instance level. However, when I opened the actual process model, there is no value configured for the Supervisor field—it is not hardcoded anywhere in the process model.

I have checked the process model and related configurations, but I’m still unable to figure out where this Supervisor value is coming from.

Has anyone faced a similar issue in Appian or have any idea what could be causing this? Any suggestions on where I should look or how I can troubleshoot this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

That sounds strange, is it possible these process instances that failed started from an older version of the process that did have something configured for the supervisor? Also if you generate documentation for the process model, do you see anything configured for the value?

It might also help to post a few screenshots to show what you’re seeing.

Make sure Manpreet Singh is not a deactivated user or a value that Appian can’t resolve to a valid user (for example, the text doesn’t match any active username/user).

Hi @yogeshc213832,

A few things that you should check

  • Make sure if there is any supervisor for those users, if already configured, it is not deactivated.
  • In the update user profile smart service, there is an input parameter called "Overwrite All Fields." Try to utilize this effectively as per your requirements.
  • Make sure the user you are updating is not deactivated too.
  • Also, you should be checking if there is any other expression evaluation issue in the process model or not. Sometimes expressions can fail or behave unexpectedly if they reference objects that don’t exist, have wrong types, or have runtime issues.
