Process Model Annotations

Question

As someone who likes to have code with easy to read comments explaining what everything does and why, I like to use the annotation feature on my process models. However, the annotation boxes have the baffling functionality of obscuring nodes beneath them. I'd ideally like to just stretch an annotation box over a pack of nodes and note "These nodes are here for purpose x" so the next person who looks at them doesn't have to dive into the nodes to figure it out. Is there any way to do that currently without obscuring the nodes I've put the annotation box around? And if not, can we request that for future updates?

Nothing I know of can force annotations into some sort of "background layer", though that does sound interesting.  Usually in this sort of case I just lay an annotation box right above or right below a series of nodes if i want it to look as if it's touching them all, that or (maybe easier to maintain) create one that's a bit more detached, but with diagonal "connector" lines attached to the nodes it references.
