DRAFT KB-XXXX Tomcat fails to load with "You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version"

Symptoms

Tomcat fails to start with the following error:

ERROR org.hibernate.util.JDBCExceptionReporter - You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 'system, url_alias, uuid, version_uuid) values (1, 1537972687766, 1, 153797268776' at line 1

Cause

This error is returned when an unsupported version of MySQL is used.
