DRAFT KB-XXXX "Failed to register catchup" and "Could not publish rules" error seen in application server log

This issue has been resolved in an Appian hotfix/new Appian version. Please apply the latest hotfix to your Appian installation or upgrade to the latest version of Appian.
 

Symptoms

Some users will report the following errors in the application server log when attempting to use a custom component plugin.

YYYY-MM-DD HH-MM-SS [Appian Work Item - <WORK_ITEM_NUMBER> - <ENGINE_NAME> : CatchupRequest] 
ERROR com.appiancorp.process.engine.CatchupRequest - Failed to register catchup (2), can retry java.lang.NullPointerException
...
YYYY-MM-DD HH-MM-SS [Appian Work Item - <WORK_ITEM_NUMBER> - <ENGINE_NAME> : PublishRuleRequest]
ERROR com.appiancorp.process.engine.PublishRuleRequest - Could not publish rules java.lang.NullPointerException

The errors will also be seen in the respective engine logs.

Cause

This issue has been addressed via AN-127095 in Appian 19.1 Hotfix Package A.

Action

Apply the latest hotfix to your Appian installation or upgrade to the latest version of Appian.
