When starting Appian Data Server, the following warning about missing appian-topology.xml appears in the script output of start.sh and in the data-server.log file:
start.sh
0 [main] INFO com.appian.data.TopologyFactory - Could not find /appian/data-server/conf/appian-topology.xml. The default topology configuration will be used.
In distributed installations and installations that use non-standard port numbers for Appian components, the Appian Data Server may subsequently fail to start with log messages indicating it is unable to reach Kafka.
The Appian Data Server is looking for the appian-topology.xml file in <APPIAN_HOME>/data-server/conf, but cannot find a copy. The file is not in the directory by default.
<APPIAN_HOME>/data-server/conf
If the Data Server starts up as expected, this message is benign and can be ignored. If the Data Server fails to start, ensure that your topology has a Kafka broker on the same server as the Data Server. Once this is confirmed, copy the appian-topology.xml file from <APPIAN_HOME>/ear/suite.ear/conf to <APPIAN_HOME>/data-server/conf and restart the Appian Data Server.
<APPIAN_HOME>/ear/suite.ear/conf
This article applies to Appian 18.1 and above.
