DRAFT KB-XXXX Windows service dies unexpectedly when running a distributed installation

Symptoms

When attempting to start Appian as a windows service, the service may unexpectedly die while services and service manager show a running status.

This would occur when running a distributed installation of Appian with one server containing all components of Appian and the other server containing only service manager and additional engines.

Cause 

This a known issue with how the windows service is determining that the service has stopped. From Service Manager's perspective there are no issues.

This issue has been reported to the Appian Product Team. The reference number for this issue is AN-113199.

Workaround

Starting and Stopping Appian on the secondary server, with only additional engines and service manager, should be done from command line.

This article applies to all versions of Appian.
